It seems I need a distant perspective if I am to think well of things.

When I was younger I was heavily involved in church. At one stage, during the “good works” phase of my Christian enthusiasms, we went to a church member’s family farm to help them out. City kids doing country things - mending fences, herding sheep and so on.
It all got a bit much for me one day so I climbed up a small hill to get away from everyone. I distinctly remember the feeling of distance - watching my church friends scurrying around beneath me. More particularly, I had the feeling of increasing distance - until they all became like small little ants and their movements lost their meaning. I remember the clarity of the moment so well: when seen from a great distance, things that once seemed important now start to seem, well, less important.
