Sydney World Pride: Welcome!

This month World Pride comes to Sydney, an opportunity to really explore difference. World Pride celebrates diversity – in gender identity, sexual preference and cultural background. This is what the rainbow represents - the colourful diversity of human beings.

I consider myself a progressive person, open to the ethos of World Pride. I socialise, I believe, with similarly open-minded people. Nevertheless, I hope that at some point during this month I will find myself shocked or exposed.

Let me explain. I hope, in the next few weeks, to be shocked by expressions of homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia (or other forms of exclusion) from my friends, family, community, colleagues.

This might seem like an odd thing to hope for. I am certainly not hoping that abuse will be directed towards World Pride participants.
